A state grand jury has declined to file criminal charges against members of the New Jersey State Police force involved in a fatal encounter in Knowlton.
Prosecutors say 38-year-old Anthony Avitable was at a friend's home in Feb. 2024 when an argument broke out. He allegedly got a shotgun and shot the couple, killing the woman.
Body camera footage shows state troopers catching up to him near Route 46 and I-80, tackling and handcuffing him.
Avitable suffered a medical episode while in custody. Troopers attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to prosecutors, a Pennsylvania medical examiner concluded that the manner of Avitable’s death was an accident and the cause of his death was “drug toxicity complicating hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”
