The family of a man shot and killed by Garfield police officers has reached an $180,000 settlement in their federal lawsuit connected to the shooting.
Jasmine Rivera, the mother of Malik Williams’ son, was suing Bergen County, the city of Garfield and the officers who shot Williams.
Rivera’s lawyer told the Record newspaper that she was disappointed with the sum but decided it was the best thing for her and Williams’ child.
Williams was shot and killed in December 2011 after he broke out of the Garfield Police Station. Police say he was barricaded inside a garage and, when officers entered, approached them "in a threatening manner" holding a hammer and a saw.
Disputes of the police department’s claims sparked protests.
A grand jury declined to indict the officers in 2012.
