The bodies at Gilgo Beach associated with alleged serial killer Rex Heuermann were only found while authorities were searching for Shannan Gilbert, of Jersey City.

Gilbert went missing in 2010. During the search, authorities stumbled upon human remains belonging to at least 18 women – most of whom were sex workers.

News 12 New Jersey spoke to John Ray, an attorney for the Gilbert family.

Ray says that while there is no evidence linking Heuermann to Gilbert’s death, there is no doubt in his and the Gilbert’s family’s minds that she was murdered by someone.

Authorities have said that Gilbert died as the result of a “tragic accident.”
