A former federal prosecutor says Craigslist can?t be held liable for content submitted by users, despite recent connections to a series of crimes reportedly linked to the site.
The company has come under fire for its erotic services section, which police say led to the death of a masseuse in a Boston motel. Philip Markoff, the accused murderer, has also been linked by authorities to other crimes apparently originating through the site. Until recently, Markoff was engaged to a native of Little Silver.
Former federal prosecutor Fred Tecce believes action should be taken to prevent future events similar to the Craigslist slaying. Tecce says Craigslist is legally in the clear for Markoff?s alleged crime, but the laws that protect them are antiquated.
"The police are trying to apply laws that were written 100 years ago, before the Internet came around, to stop people who are now advertising illegal services over the Internet."
