A multiple-alarm fire in Jersey City early Thursday morning destroyed two vacant buildings, injured eight firefighters and displaced several residents from nearby homes.
Officials say the Jersey City Fire Department was called around 1:32 a.m. to the 300 block Fourth Street, where they found two vacant homes at 319 and 321 Fourth Street on fire. Both buildings collapsed within 30 minutes. No civilian injuries were reported, according to officials.
Local residents reported possible trespassers in the buildings at the time of the fire. Emergency responders searched the rubble, but found no victims.
Officials say seven firefighters and one captain were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
Jersey City's Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are assisting five displaced residents from 317 and 323 Fourth Street.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
