An 11-year-old boy has died from injuries he suffered after being hit by a bus in Jersey City.
The incident happened on JFK Boulevard near Neptune Avenue at 8:15 a.m. Friday, where officials say the boy, George Gonzalez, was hit by a Jitney bus as he was trying to cross the street.
Local residents say the area is very active on weekday mornings because of its proximity to P.S. 30. It also doesn't have a crossing guard, though the next intersection to the south does.
Gonzalez lived with his aunt and uncle, who say he was running back home to pick up his football jersey. They say the Jitney bus went around a Snapple truck parked for delivery, and hit Gonzalez while he was crossing the street.
Nelson Rodriguez, the victim's uncle, says Gonzalez wasn't breathing when he got to him. Officials say he had suffered massive head trauma.
The family is angered but at the same time is grieving a boy who had lots of hopes and dreams.
"Good grades in school, never gave us a problem," Rodriguez said. "A straight-A student. We put him in Catholic school so he could better himself because he wanted to be a doctor when he grows up."
News 12 New Jersey has confirmed that the driver of the bus is Raul Delatorre-Galaza.
Delatorre-Galaza was allegedly driving with a suspended license and has been charged with causing death while driving with a suspended license.
