Labor Day has a whole new meaning for a Belmar police officer.
After working a double shift on the holiday, Mike Yee came home to his wife going into labor.
With no time to get to the hospital, the officer and his wife, Valerie, delivered their baby boy in their bathtub.
Little Enzo is now 10 days old.
The Yees say they never expected his birth to be in their upstairs bathtub.
"I was working an overtime shift like I normally do. Got off around 3 a.m.," said Mike.
The Belmar police officer learned his wife was going into contractions during his commute home.
"I went to go take a shower, get ready for the hospital and when I got out of the shower, my contractions started heightening and getting worse," said Valerie.
They never made it to the car. With time running out, they opted for the bathtub, as Mike remembered his police academy training and the birth of their first son, Dom, 2 1/2 years ago.
"So, when she was laying that way her head was facing. That way I was like this leaning against the back here, so I had more than enough room. Luckily, I was on this side. Take deep breaths. Push push, push, push. Give her a break. Take a deep breath again. Push, push, push, push and sure enough after about five, six good pushes, little baby Enzo popped right out," Mike recalled.
Valerie put her full trust and faith into that training.
"I felt really good in my pregnancy. My husband was a great team player. I have full trust in him so that made it a lot better for me," said Valerie.
By the time the paramedics arrived, Enzo was already born.
"I think for everybody who got there, it was like 'Oh man' moment," Mike said.
"My doctor said my second would come flying out because my first did. I just didn't think like that," said Valerie through laughter.
A later trip to the hospital proved both mom and tiny Enzo were in perfect health.
"I feel like God has a plan for everything, so I feel like it worked out as it was supposed to," Valerie added.
