A driver apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake while leaving a car wash in Wayne on Thursday, causing her vehicle to accelerate into a utility pole and bring down power lines, according to police.
Wayne police said the vehicle was exiting a drive-through car wash in the township's Mountain View section when the driver rapidly accelerated after shifting into drive.
The vehicle continued onto Mountain View Boulevard, where it struck a utility pole and snapped it in half, police said.
Community Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 said firefighters responded to the area of Mountainview Boulevard and Taylor Drive for a reported vehicle fire. They found electrical wires and a transformer had fallen onto the vehicle.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle before firefighters arrived and was turned over to emergency medical personnel for evaluation, according to the fire company. No vehicle fire was found.
Police closed a section of Mountain View Boulevard and Holy Cross Way near the Route 23 northbound service road and established detours, police said.
Firefighters secured the area because of the electrical hazards and remained at the scene until PSE&G personnel arrived to address the downed wires and damaged equipment.
The driver's condition was not immediately available.
