Emergency crews rescued a 73-year-old driver from an overturned vehicle following a serious crash in Manchester Township on Wednesday.
According to Manchester police, officers responded to Route 539 and New Mexico Drive at about 5:45 p.m. for reports of a single-vehicle crash. When crews arrived, they found a 2022 black Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross lying on its side. The driver, a 73-year-old Whiting woman, was trapped inside the vehicle.
Investigators believe the Mitsubishi was heading south on Route 539 when the driver veered off the roadway, striking a utility pole and a fence, before flipping over.
"The collision caused heavy damage to the vehicle and resulted in the entrapment of the driver," police said in a statement.
Crews removed the driver from the vehicle and transported her to Jersey Shore University Hospital via medical helicopter. She suffered numerous injuries and is currently listed in stable condition. Police said the woman was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
"At this time, failure to maintain lane is believed to be the primary contributing factor to the crash," Manchester police said.
The incident remains under investigation.
