An overnight fire damaged a building on New Lots Avenue in East New York and left a family without a place to stay, according to neighbors and the American Red Cross.

The fire broke out just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at a building on New Lots Avenue between Shepherd Avenue and Berriman Street.

Video from the scene shows firefighters using a ladder truck as they worked to put out the flames.

The building houses Santo Domingo Restaurant on the ground floor with apartments above.

The FDNY says the fire started in the rear of the building and spread to the first and second floors. The fire was brought under control in less than 40 minutes.

Vivian Robles, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years, said she was startled awake by the fire.

"I hear crackling and then I see the bright red, all the red, and I jump up and the first thing I thought about my grandson in the room," Robles said. "It was sad because they just started working again at the restaurant , not even like two weeks ago. They just renewed the place and everything."

The American Red Cross says it has provided emergency assistance, including financial aid, to one household made up of two adults and three children.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
