Fire at multiple Newark homes displaces 7 families, Red Cross says

Several families were displaced after a fire spread to multiple homes in Newark Saturday afternoon, according to officials.

Firefighters responded around 5:03 p.m. to a fire at 933 South 19th St., according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm after it extended to nearby homes at 935 and 931 South 19th St. and caused a brush fire in the backyard of 922 South 19th St.

Firefighters also handled a small fire at 918 South 19th St.

No injuries were reported.

The main fire was under control by 6:31 p.m.

The American Red Cross said on Saturday night that it was assisting 25 people from seven families with temporary lodging, food, clothing and other immediate needs.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
