Heavy traffic and jughandles may cause slowdowns for New Jersey drivers, but according to a new study, Garden State motorists aren’t hitting the brakes on their tempers.

According to a new report by ConsumerAffairs, New Jersey ranks fifth in the nation for the worst road rage. The report uses the most recent fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration along with stats from the Gun Violence Archive. ConsumerAffairs determined that 46% of all traffic deaths in the state were tied to careless or aggressive driving.

The study also shows that between 2023 and 2025, New Jersey recorded six traffic incidents that involved gun violence. That is one of the lowest rates in the country, about 85% lower than the national rate, the study states.

Despite the Garden State’s aggression behind the wheel, ConsumerAffairs says other states have accelerated past New Jersey when it comes to road rage. Arkansas ranks number one in the United States, with New Mexico, Louisiana and Colorado right behind. Looking for the state with the least road rage? According to the report, you’ll have to travel to Maine.
