All lanes on Route 1&9 are open in Linden following a water main break. Crews have secured the break and are working on completing repairs.
New Jersey American Water says that the break was on a 12-inch cast iron water main. It sent water pouring out from the ground and rushing down Park Avenue.
The water company says that 25 customers – mostly commercial businesses – were without running water.
“Around 2 a.m. the ground started swelling up…and all of a sudden it broke. Water started gushing out and flooded the street,” says Wawa employee Barry Walker. “The cops cleaned up the drain so the water could recede out and the water company came in.”
Officials say that once the water is restored a boil water advisory is not expected.
The cause of the break was not immediately known, but officials say that hot, dry weather and then big rainstorms could have exacerbated any weaknesses in the infrastructure.
