Waretown physicist George Smith is enjoying the worldwide fame that accompanies his new Nobel Prize.
Smith, 79, and former Bell Labs co-worker Willard S. Boyle were awarded for developing the "eye" that makes digital photography possible. The pair came up with their idea 40 years ago.
"It's a very elated feeling," says Smith. "Does wonders for your ego."
Boyle and Smith share this year's prize with another American physicist who developed fiber-optic cable. They head to Sweden in December for the awards ceremony.
