State lawmakers are mulling whether or not to push a deadline to fix questionable voting machines back by two years.

The machines in question were first ordered to be fixed four years ago. If approved, this would be the third delay since then.

The reliability and vulnerability of New Jersey's electronic voting machine has been called into question by critics, including a Princeton professor who's suing that state over the machines. Lawmakers are seeking the delay in order to find a solution to optimize the technology.

Adding printers to the existing machines has been proposed, but a number of politicians question whether it'd work. The delay would give the state two years to test the printers and scanners in selected machines through 2010.

"Perhaps we don't need to take a giant step today but take a small step instead," says Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D).
