More than a dozen schools in Newark and Jersey City received a makeover Saturday from the organization Jersey Cares.
More than 2,000 volunteers flocked to the schools with cans of paint and brushes in hand to freshen up several New Jersey schools as part of Jersey Cares Day. School employees say stricter budgets have limited how many renovations and repairs can be done in the schools.
Volunteers were also cleaned up Liberty State Park, pulling weeds and tidying the landscapes.
"I think with the new president, he's telling us to volunteer, and I think it's the year to volunteer and go out and do things," Marilyn Lobos, a Jersey Cares volunteer, says.
Organizers estimate the number of volunteers this year was nearly double the number from last year.
