An air conditioning outage has been reported at a housing unit inside Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark.
Rep. Rob Menendez told News 12 that families and advocates contacted his office about the issue. Rep. Josh Gottheimer also said on social media that his office has received similar calls.
News 12 reached out to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which confirmed that it is working to repair the air conditioning in a portion of one housing unit.
In a statement, an ICE spokesperson said the following:
"ICE is overseeing the air conditioning repair for a portion of one housing unit at Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey. We have added extra portable air conditioning units and accessibility to ice water to those detainees who remained in the unit. The rapid response to this incident demonstrates ICE's commitment to uphold the highest detention standards, following all applicable health and safety guidelines."
