A 17-year-old driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated after a vehicle left Route 17 and crashed into the second floor of a building in Mahwah, police said.

The crash occurred just after midnight on June 28, when an officer observed the vehicle traveling north on Route 17 lose control near the West Ramapo Avenue off-ramp, according to police.

Authorities said the vehicle veered off the highway, became airborne and struck the second floor of a building on West Ramapo Avenue.

Police, firefighters and EMS responded to the scene. Both occupants had exited the vehicle before first responders arrived. The building was under construction and vacant at the time of the crash.

Mahwah EMS evaluated both occupants, who initially declined medical treatment. Police said the 17-year-old passenger was later taken to a hospital by his parents.

Following an investigation, the 17-year-old driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. Police said the teen was issued several motor vehicle summonses and released to a guardian.
