The owners of Colonial Bakery in Lavallette say the group of men that stole crumb cake from their store came in, apologized, and paid for the crumb cake.
The bakery credits the reaction to their post on social media with helping find the thieves. On Tuesday, they posted a video of the theft on their Facebook page. The video shows the men standing outside the rear entry of the bakery and one of them recording the theft. One of the men grabs the tray and disappears.
Users helped determine the punishment for the crime in a poll that was created on the bakery's Facebook page.
The company wrote, “While we would never condone theft of any kind and did take the situation seriously, we did try to take a lighthearted approach with our funny poll of consequences. Sometimes you just need to make lemonade out of lemons, right?!”
The company wrote that it’s humbling to see their small business gather so much support from the community.
“We know the barrier island is a special place where we watch out for each other and this was yet another example of exactly that,” they wrote. “Now…back to baking.”
