The series of tornados that hit Long Island Saturday has residents stunned at what happened right outside their front doors.
Hampton Bays resident Walter Zornes says the tornado took the tops of two trees, twisted them and then lifted the tips into the air. They landed around 15 feet away.
He says the power went out and a loud thump rattled their property on Lyncliff Road.
The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that a tornado hit the Hampton Bays area during Saturday's storm, possibly coming in as a waterspout off of Shinnecock Bay. It was the sixth on Long Island in a single day.
They say the tornado was 35 yards wide, cut a path 8.2 miles long and went across a portion of the South Fork from about 4:08 p.m. until 4:14 p.m.
Zornes and his 16-year-old son were in the house, getting ready to leave when the tornado hit. He says the noise and aftermath are something that they won't forget anytime soon.
"It sounded like, almost like a jet taking off," Zornes says. "Next thing you know, this deafening boom, the whole house shook and then the lights went out."
His son says it sounded like a train outside the front yard amplified by "probably a hundred times."
Hampton Bays resident Clementi says she and her family lost 10 huge trees during the tornado, but considers themselves "fortunate."
"It's incredible that nobody got hurt, nobody's house got damaged, nobody's car got damaged," Clementi says.
According to Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, however, there was storm damage in our parts of the village. The damage was so extensive that he declared a state of emergency.
He says there is no estimate yet on the dollar amount of all the damage.
