The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office released police body camera video from a police-involved shooting in Rumson on Sept. 6.
Authorities say two suspects tried breaking into homes and vehicles before a confrontation led to an officer shooting one of them.
“There are two men masked on my front porch…Two men masked on the front porch of my home” is how the conversation was recorded between a frantic neighbor and the 911 dispatcher around 4:30 a.m.
Police responded to the area of Woodmere Drive and Avenue of Two Rivers in Rumson. Video obtained through an Open Records request shows the suspects’ car hitting a Rumson patrol vehicle.
The suspects’ car continues down Avenue of Two Rivers toward Rumson Drive, chased by the Rumson officer. As they approach that intersection, the video captures a Fair Haven police officer standing outside his car as he opens fire eight times at the suspects’ vehicle when it fails to stop.
According to police records, 20-year-old Rasheen Yarbrough, of Missouri and 27-year-old Nnamdi Atumudo, of Irvington were arrested and taken to the hospital. Atumudo suffered a facial injury from the officer’s bullet, according to police records.
Additional charges may be filed against the suspects from prior incidents that morning in Howell, according to police sources.
Both men are locked up at the Monmouth County jail, facing theft and burglary charges.
The Monmouth County Professional Responsibility Unit continues its investigation into the circumstances of the police-involved shooting.
