The cleanup of a North Jersey Superfund site will be delayed for at least a year and a half.
Honeywell says work on the Quanta property in Edgewater is scheduled to start at the end of 2015.
Several storage tanks on the property were torn down 25 years ago. Officials say the soil beneath the surface is contaminated with coal tar, arsenic and other chemicals.
Residents say they didn't know the site was contaminated, but aren't surprised. "I don't think it's the only place around here that's contaminated, unfortunately," says Kathryn Biamonte.
The remediation process will take several years to complete. The EPA's plan involves isolating and containing the toxic dirt, but not removing it.
