A nonprofit restaurant owned by Jon Bon Jovi and his wife welcomed furloughed federal workers in for a free lunch Monday afternoon.
For two hours, anyone with proof of federal employment could get a free meal at JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank. The meal was offered in conjunction with the Phil and Tammy Murphy Family Foundation.
The attendees included one woman who said she has been furloughed from work at the Treasury Department. She came to eat with her children.
“I'm very appreciative. It's very generous. We're here just to spend time together and get a hot meal,” the woman said.
The federal government has been partially shut down since Dec. 22, 2018. About 800,000 federal workers are not being paid even though some, including members of the Coast Guard, are required to report for work.
The shutdown is related to a dispute between President Donald Trump and Congress over funding for security at the United States and Mexico border.
