Many Newark store owners have begun taking certain baseball caps off their shelves after concerns were raised about colors and icons being associated with gangs.
Three kinds of Yankees baseball caps were taken off the shelves this week. The Yankee caps causing concern are white with blue bandanas, white with red bandanas and black with gold letters and a crown. They reportedly bare the trademarks of the Crips, Bloods and Latin Kings gangs.
Some say it is not the hats that promote gangs and violence, but that those who want to be in a gang will be in a gang.
Both Major League Baseball and the Yankees have condemned the caps, but say they were never given the chance to review the hats before they went on sale.
The three caps in question were manufactured by New Era. The company said it would increase efforts to learn more about gang symbols.
