Sources tell News 12 New Jersey that a discharged patient crashed stolen vehicles before he was shot by police Tuesday.
Route 35 has reopened in both directions following the crash and police investigation.
Police have identified the man involved in the incident as 33-year-old Justin Chacon. Sources say Chacon, who had just been discharged from the Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, stole a van that had been parked out front but was left running.
Chacon then allegedly made his way south and east to Route 35 to Middletown where he crashed the van on a center divider. As a passing motorist stopped to help, sources say Chacon stole that person’s car and then drove away.
He eventually crashed close to Union Avenue on Route 35 and was subsequently shot by a Holmdel police officer after a Taser was used. Chacon survived the shooting and was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center for treatment. It was not clear if he had any weapons on his person.
The two crashes backed up traffic for miles on Route 35, just as people were hitting the road for the morning commute to work and school.
A spokesperson for Bayshore Medical Center wrote in a statement, "We are working collaboratively with Holmdel Township Police and law enforcement agencies involving an incident with a patient that was discharged from our medical center. As a result of the active police investigation, we cannot comment any further."
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what charges will be filed.
