Dozens of kids in Monmouth County learned what it takes to be in the field of law enforcement thanks to Sheriff’s Youth Week.
The program is a mini boot camp of sorts and is the longest program of its kind in New Jersey with more than 30 years in existence.
Throughout the week, the 47 cadets who signed up experience a taste of what it’s like to be in law enforcement – from drill instruction to physical challenges.
"It shows a brighter future," said Jake Dembowski, of Middletown. "I know how easy it is to get sucked into social media and see the negatives but when you actually get into the field and explore, you can see all the positives that are there. The negatives are just 1%."
Sheriff Shaun Golden says, "This is how we connect with the young adults to show them there’s a lot behind the scenes here in this great career and you can do it."
The program is 100% free. More information on how to join next summer’s program is available at all Monmouth County high schools.
