Fatal collision involving garbage truck shuts down Bergen Turnpike in Union City

A person was killed in a collision involving a garbage truck and an e-bike in Union City Wednesday morning.

The crash happened on Bergen Turnpike near JFK Boulevard aeound 3:30 a.m. News 12 crews at the scene observed what appeared to be a body covered by a sheet underneath a garbage truck, along with an e-bike nearby.

The truck was labeled “Rivoca,” a commercial waste and recycling company that operates a sorting facility in Clifton.

A large police and emergency response remained at the scene for several hours as investigators gathered evidence and spoke with people in the area.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed it is investigating a fatal collision on Bergen Turnpike.

Part of Bergen Turnpike near 37th Street was closed during the investigation, but the roadway has since reopened.

Officials have not yet released additional information about the victim or exactly how the crash occurred.
