The search continues for a 14-year-old boy who went swimming at a beach in Wildwood Monday afternoon and never resurfaced.

At about 1:26 p.m., a Wildwood police officer was flagged down at the beach near Schellenger Avenue for reports of swimmers in distress. According to a statement from the Wildwood Police Department, multiple first responders, including police, fire and lifeguards, responded to the area and saw several people in the surf.

“A Wildwood police officer entered the water and assisted three swimmers out of the water,” police said. “At this time, it was determined that one swimmer, a 14-year-old juvenile male, was still missing.”

One of the swimmers was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition. The two other swimmers who were rescued were treated at the scene.

Multiple rescue swimmers continued to search for the missing teen, along with boats and helicopters from the U.S. Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police. As of Monday night, the teen had not been located, and Wildwood police said the search efforts would continue.

Last month, a 19-year-old boogie boarder went missing in Ocean City after going into the water with friends. The teen was hit by a wave and never resurfaced. Following an extensive search, the mission turned to a recovery operation.
