The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a report of a gunman at a Holmdel school Tuesday as an apparent hoax.

According to investigators, a phone call was made to the Village Elementary School just before 11 a.m. to report an armed intruder was at the school. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and school officials contacted the Holmdel police.

Law enforcement from several surrounding towns came to assist in the investigation. The school was swept for any potential threats. Students were evacuated from the school as a precaution.

Officials determined the school was safe by 2 p.m. and students were allowed back inside.

"We will always view a threat of violence against our young students as a serious threat. A dozen law enforcement agencies responded in full force today to ensure that safety, but it turned out to be nothing more than a hoax - a very costly hoax," Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said in a statement. "Thankfully no one was hurt."

The prosecutor, along with local law enforcement, will investigate who made the call.
