Car vandalism in Hoboken sparks concern among residents

A recent string of vehicle-related crimes in Hoboken has some residents on edge after police linked an assault investigation on Tuesday when several cars were vandalized across the city.
The Hoboken Police Department is seeking a person connected to a simple assault that occurred Sept. 15 around 10 p.m. near Hudson and Fourth streets. They said the incident happened while multiple vehicles were being vandalized in different parts of Hoboken that same night.
The investigation comes just weeks after a black Honda was reported stolen at Hudson and Ninth streets a few blocks away. The incidents have raised concerns among residents about vehicle crime in the area.
"Car theft right in front of my house," said one resident. "This is very strange for Hoboken."
Some residents said the recent incidents have prompted them to rethink where they park their vehicles. However, others told News 12 that paying for more secure parking isn't an option for them.
"It's so expensive to park in these garages," said another resident. "They want almost $300. When you want to rent, they say it's full. So what choice do you have but out here?"
Residents along Hudson Street described the neighborhood as largely residential and quiet, making the recent crimes feel unusual. Some are now calling for additional security measures in areas where the incidents occurred.
"It would be good if there was some monitoring or cameras set up to ensure it's not happening regularly," a resident said.
Despite the concerns, though, many residents said they still feel safe in Hoboken.
"This is a great area. As you can see, I'm walking my son here. I feel very safe here," said one parent. "But that's something that scares me a little bit."
Police had not announced any arrests related to the assault investigation as of Saturday night.
Police is also asking anyone with information to contact the department.
