A 21-year-old Turkish national has died following an ocean rescue off a Cape May County beach on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency personnel responded to the area of 2nd Avenue and the beach around 2:09 p.m. on Sept. 17 after receiving reports of a swimmer in distress.

Before first responders arrived, several surfers in the area entered the ocean and brought the unconscious man back to shore. Members of the North Wildwood Fire Department and North Wildwood Beach Patrol immediately initiated CPR and other lifesaving measures.

The swimmer, identified by authorities as 21-year-old Ahmet Yimenici of Turkey, was transported to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the incident does not appear to involve foul play.

"Our hearts go out to Mr. Yimenici’s family during this incredibly difficult time. I also want to recognize the quick actions of the surfers and civilians on scene," North Wildwood Police Chief Katherine Madden said in a statement. "Their willingness to act without hesitation gave this young man the best possible chance, and we’re grateful for their courage."

City officials reminded visitors to only swim at beaches with lifeguards present and on duty.
