Paterson adds solar-powered stop signs to improve visibility, reduce accidents

If you've been driving through Paterson recently, you may have noticed something new at intersections across the city: stop signs equipped with flashing LED lights.
The City of Paterson has been installing solar-powered LED stop signs at more than 200 intersections over the past several months to improve visibility, enhance pedestrian safety, and reduce crashes.
Mayor Andre Sayegh says the goal is simple: make stop signs impossible to miss.
"We don't want people to ever say they didn't see the stop sign. We want them to stop saying that. Just like you see the golden arches at McDonald's. We want you to see stop signs in the city of Paterson."
One of the newest installations is at Granite and Redwood avenues. Residents say the added visibility could help address a common problem: drivers failing to come to a complete stop.
Paterson resident Jorge Sarmiento believes the flashing lights will make a difference.
"I think it is important because there are a lot of people that even though they see the stop sign, they don't stop like they have to, like the law requires. These signs with the flashlights are better for people to see," Sarmiento said.
The improvements extend beyond stop signs. The city is also adding new thermoplastic roadway striping designed to be more visible and longer-lasting than traditional paint.
City officials say the upgrades are especially important in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
"You see people walking dogs. There are seniors there. We want to keep our children safe." Sayegh said.
The project is funded through the Paterson Urban Enterprise Zone program, focusing on busy intersections and commercial corridors where more residents are walking.
Officials say the highly visible signs and roadway markings are intended to help prevent crashes and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
"They're visible both during the day and at night," officials say.
The benefits go beyond daily traffic. Because the signs are solar-powered, city officials say they will continue operating during power outages, helping direct traffic and maintain safety during emergencies.
Drivers are still being reminded to stay alert behind the wheel.
"You have to keep your eyes on the road at all times," state officials.
The city says additional intersections will receive the upgrades as the safety initiative continues throughout Paterson.
