A pedestrian suffered severe head injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Bridgeton on Saturday night, according to the city's police chief.

The person was hit near Route 49 and Fayette Street and was flown to a hospital for treatment, Bridgeton Police Chief James Battavio said.

While police were investigating the crash, another driver struck a police vehicle and then hit a fire truck while attempting to flee, Battavio said.

That driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Police said the driver was not involved in the initial crash that injured the pedestrian.

No additional information about the pedestrian's condition or either crash was immediately available.
