A 29-year-old woman who allegedly posed as a student at New Brunswick High School will avoid jail time.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office says that Hyejeong Shin will have to complete three years of a pre-trial program for first-time offenders.
Shin pleaded not guilty in March to a charge that she used a fake birth certificate to enroll at the school.
The lawyer said Shin had no nefarious intentions when she enrolled at the school in January. She was just seeking to return to “a place of safety and welcoming and an environment that she looks back on fondly," he said.
Authorities have said Shin got the phone numbers of students who helped her find her way through the school and continued to text some of them days after her ruse was discovered.
