A milestone moment in the Gateway Tunnel Project – Gov. Phil Murphy, as well as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, signed an agreement Tuesday that will kick start the first phase of the project.
Lawmakers say once the project is finished, it should really cut down on commuting time for people going to and from New York’s Penn Station.
The project would build two tunnels -- The Hudson River Tunnel and Portal North Bridge -- connecting New Jersey to Penn Station.
Penn Station has seen some major delay problems since Superstorm Sandy ravaged one of the Hudson River's rail lines, prompting New Jersey Transit and Amtrak to share a single tunnel, with only one track in each direction.
Murphy says the project better positions the state to take advantage of the full economic benefits of being a regional crossroads.
