New Jersey residents do not seem to be in favor of expanding casinos in New Jersey, according to polls.
The measure would allow two new casinos to be built outside Atlantic City, with some of the profits going to bolster the city, which is experiencing financial hardships.
Supporters and critics of the plan have spent millions of dollars in advertising. But polls show that the majority of New Jersey voters do not support the plan.
"New Jerseyans don't want casino expansion. They never really have been that warm towards it," says Rutgers-Eagleton Polling Center interim director Ashley Koning. "We've been polling this actually for decades and they don't want to see what happened in Atlantic City be repeated somewhere else and that's their No. 1 concern."
The state recently rejected Atlantic City's five-year recovery plan and is moving toward a takeover of the city.
