Police are looking for the person who stole three plaques showing a timeline of the morning of the Sept. 11 attacks from a memorial in Atlantic Highlands.
The theft happened at the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial in Atlantic Highlands, along the pathway at the Eagle Memorial.
According to park officials, at some point between Wednesday and Thursday, someone decided to vandalize and steal the plaques.
The Monmouth County Park System provided News 12 New Jersey with photos of the actual plaques taken from the rocks. The plaques show the timeline of Sept. 11 beginning at 7:30 a.m. that Tuesday morning and then mark the time each plane took off, and when they crashed -- and when both towers fell.
Park officials say they are valued at about $500 each, one was left but the other three were taken.
"What's the purpose of that?" says Bob Suto. "These are people that dedicated their lives and stuff for this thing this is what this monument means it means a lot to those people family and friends and people like me too that maybe never even knew half of those people. It's just a shame "
Suto says if anyone knows who did this, turn them in.
It comes roughly two weeks following the 18th commemoration of the terror attacks.
Anyone who has information regarding the theft should call Atlantic Highlands police at 732-291-1212.
