There were some scary moments for an Essex County family when two masked thieves broke into their home while the family slept.
Verona police say that the incident happened at a Cambridge Road home around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 1. They say that two people wearing face masks, hoodies and gloves broke into the home via an unlocked side door.
Police say the thieves entered the house twice and took two bags from the home. Police believe they were looking for the key fobs for a vehicle parked in the driveway, as has been the recent crime trend in New Jersey.
The thieves were not able to steal any vehicle.
Police are warning residents to keep the doors to their homes and vehicles locked.
Anyone who might have information about the incident should call Verona police at 973-239-5000.
