Investigators say a man ran over his girlfriend at least three times last night near a Fort Lee intersection because she wanted to end their relationship. The prosecutor's office has identified the driver as Charles Ann, 26, of Fort Lee.
They say Ann struck and killed Aena Hong at around 5 p.m. yesterday near the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Inwood Terrace.
Investigators say Ann drove over the victim at least three times. Police say Hong had been trying to end their relationship.
The supervisor of the high-rise building where Hong and Ann lived said he would frequently see the couple outside fighting. The building supervisor says he saw a big change in the suspect about two weeks ago, which he says is about the time the couple broke up. He said the young man went from somebody who was always outgoing and joking with people in the building - to someone who was crying because the relationship was over.
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata registered to Ann was found abandoned on Tenth Avenue in Fort Lee a few hours after the attack. He was later arrested at a friend's apartment in Flushing, Queens. Police say Ann had a large amount of cash and a passport with him when he was arrested. Authorities speculate that he planned to flee to his native South Korea.
