Police in Atlantic Highlands say the driver who fatally struck a husband and wife was drunk.

The accident happened Friday just after 8 p.m. near State Highway 36 East and Grand Avenue.

According to police, John Grogan, 60, and his wife Barbara Grogan, 59, were trying to cross Route 36 when they were hit by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Dylan Rieger, 27.

Rieger stayed at the scene and was later charged with DWI and reckless driving.

The highway was closed to traffic while investigators worked to secure the scene.
