Monmouth County prosecutors say a husband and wife were hit and killed by a car while they were walking in Atlantic Highlands Friday night.

They say the pedestrians were struck just after 8 p.m. near State Highway 36 East and Grand Avenue.

Officials say 60-year-old John Grogan and his wife, Barbara, 59, were apparently trying to cross the intersection when they were struck by a Jeep Cherokee. They were both killed.

Officials say the driver of the Jeep stayed at the scene.

The highway was closed to traffic while investigators worked to secure the scene. The road has since reopened.
