An overnight fire at Colonia Middle School forced the district to close the school Wednesday as crews continued to ventilate and clean up the building.
Woodbridge Chief Law Enforcement Officer Brian Murphy said the fire broke out around 1:45 a.m. in the art room. When crews arrived, they found fire and heavy smoke throughout the building.
Murphy said the fire "was quickly brought under control." Firefighters ventilated the building to eliminate the smoke.
Superintendent of Schools Joseph Massimino said the fire was contained to one classroom "due to the quick response by our fire department."
"There will be no school today, March 25, only for Colonia Middle School while the fire department investigates the matter and we assess the situation and its impact on our school community," Massimino said in a letter to families.
Massimino said he will provide an update to the community later today. The cause of the fire has not yet been released. It is not yet known if the building will be closed again tomorrow.
