A partial building collapse and minor chemical leak were reported at a Cumberland County vegetable processing plant Wednesday afternoon.
Cumberland County Administrator Kevin Smaniotto says the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. at Seabrook Brothers & Sons on Finley Road. He says that a portion of the vegetable processing facility collapsed. Hazmat teams also determined there was a minor release of anhydrous ammonia.
Officials say that around 150 employees were inside the building at the time and that many of them were able to get out. First responders had to rescue two employees from the rubble.
Officials say one employee was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. A second employee suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. A first responder was taken to the hospital for evaluation for a possible heat-related illness, according to officials.
Smaniotto says that hazmat crews are monitoring the release of the anhydrous ammonia and say that there is no hazard or threat to the community at this time.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, but officials say that there was no explosion.
According to the business’s website, Seabrook Brothers & Sons is a family-owned and operated business that grows and processes frozen vegetables. Officials say that anhydrous ammonia is used in the freezing process.
