An incident outside First Avenue School, a K-8 school in Newark prompted the school to go on lockdown this afternoon.
Police vehicles surrounded a red Jeep Grand Cherokee for two hours down the street from the school. Police dogs were seen near the Jeep. Police say the incident began when an off-duty West Orange police officer observed two people breaking into cars.
Officials say an officer was hit by the vehicle as they tried to get away. The officer fired his weapon once, but didn't hit anyone. Two suspects were taken into custody.
The West Orange police officer was taken to the hospital for observation. Newark's Professional Standards Bureau is now investigating.
