A pedestrian died after being struck by a taxi that ran off the road and hit a telephone pole in Matawan last week, authorities said.

Police responded at about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, to the area of Railroad Plaza and Johnson Street, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials found that a male taxi driver operating a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country was traveling west on Railroad Plaza when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, hitting a pedestrian and then a telephone pole.

The pedestrian, identified as 62-year-old Osvaldo Dantas, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he died at 3:53 p.m., authorities said.

The investigation is being conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, and the Matawan Police Department.

No charges or summonses have been issued.
