Getting around Paterson will soon be easier and more affordable.

Passaic County is expanding its MOVE microtransit program to Paterson, giving residents on-demand rides for just $1.90 per trip.

The service, which launched in Clifton and Passaic in 2025, operates similarly to popular rideshare apps. Riders can book trips through the MOVE app, where they are matched with other passengers traveling in the same direction and directed to nearby virtual pickup locations.

County officials say the program is designed to fill transportation gaps that traditional bus routes often can't reach.

"Traditional fixed bus routes can't reach every neighborhood or meet every need. MOVE helps fill those gaps," said Passaic County Commissioner Director Sandi Lazzara.

The program has already provided more than 100,000 rides since its launch. Officials say the service is especially important because roughly 85% of riders do not have access to a personal vehicle.

"We're arguably one of the most densely populated areas in the country," said Passaic County Deputy Director Orlando Cruz. "People can get to certain places, but it's so much more convenient to be able to get an affordable ride."

Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh says the expansion addresses a critical need for residents struggling with transportation costs.

"People have complained to me that they haven't been able to get to work or essential destinations," Sayegh said. "Now people can go to school and doctor's appointments without worrying about whether they can afford a ride."

Officials also see broader benefits for the city, including reduced parking demand, increased foot traffic for local businesses and support for economic development.

In addition to the app-based service, MOVE offers wheelchair-accessible vehicles and a toll-free number for riders who prefer to book trips by phone.

County leaders say the expansion is about more than transportation.

"It's also about opportunity, independence and making everyday life a little easier," Lazzara said.

Passaic County MOVE operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles and door-to-door service are available for those with mobility needs. Trips can be booked through the Passaic County MOVE app, available on the App Store and Google Play, or by calling 973-791-0756.
