A Paramus middle school is temporarily closed because of contaminated soil that was found outside.
The Westbrook Middle School, on Roosevelt Boulevard, was ordered closed by town Mayor James Tedesco. At a news conference, Tedesco said the school won?t be opened until the state?s Environmental Protection Agency conducts more tests.
?We should have on site contractors removing the soil from the site,? Tedesco said. ?Once that is completed, we will then have testing done throughout the entire grounds to ensure the safety of the soil.?
The soil has been outside the school since December. Tests conducted revealed that the soil is contaminated with three banned chemicals, including Chlordane, a termite pesticide.
Once the soil is removed and properly disposed of, two types of testing will take place inside the building, including hard surface swab testing and airborne testing.
Tedesco said it will take three days to determine the results. If it is determined the school cannot reopen at that time, a contingency plan is in place.
The mayor said the town?s reverse 911 system was used to contact parents about the school being closed. The school board president said he understands parents are upset about the soil. He said a review board has been organized to investigate the situation.
