On Route 9, there is a new digital billboard that reads “Americans are now more likely to die of an opioid overdose than in a car crash. It’s time to consider opioid alternatives.”
Officials say this message is the first step in educating people to try and save lives.
"This is one of the busiest highways in the state, Route 9 north and southbound, and they'll have access to this message every couple of minutes so it's going to be seen by a couple of hundred thousand people," says Mayor Owen Henry of Old Bridge.
"I think it's crucial that we continue to alert the public and make it an issue that everyone is aware of and especially this message which is alternatives to opioids," says Executive Director Angelo Valente of Partnership for a Drug Free NJ.
New Jersey currently has 3,200 overdose deaths which is the highest number since 2012.
