Newark officials said Wednesday they are making good progress in the murder case of three college students, but remained tight-lipped about any details.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker commented on the killings during a news conference about another murder case.
?We are looking at every angle of this case and connections to previous crimes and many, many other facets,? Booker said. ?We are working very hard and getting a lot of encouraging news and will continue to update you as we continue.?
Officials would not release any information about possible suspects or arrest warrants. However, Booker did say the reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment was now $150,000.
Earlier in the day, a spokeswoman for Newark Mayor Cory Booker said police are close to identifying a suspect. The spokeswoman, Lupe Todd, would not provide any details of a possible announcement or details surrounding a break in the case.
The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Wednesday that the only survivor in the attack, 19-year-old Natasha Aeriel, was able to pick out a suspect from photos. The newspaper also reported a fingerprint was lifted from a beer bottle at the scene, according to an anonymous law enforcement official.
Meanwhile, a director at the Newark Public Schools said the security cameras at the school where the crime took place had been knocked off the building. At the news conference, Police Director Gerry McCarthy addressed reports that the murders could have been premeditated.
?We?re not ruling anything out,? McCarthy said.
Friends and family members continue to mourn Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20 and Iofemi Hightower, 20. A memorial has been set up at the school where the shootings occurred. Natasha Aeriel, Terrance Aerial?s sister, was shot in the head but survived. She is currently recovering at the hospital.
