Two men who were suspected car thieves caused a crash in Newark Tuesday morning while trying to flee from police, officials say.
Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé says that Newark police officers on patrol spotted two men wearing ski masks inside a Kia. The vehicle was spotted near South Orange Avenue and Oraton Parkway in Newark around 6:30 a.m.
Fragé says that the officers suspected that the vehicle was stolen and tried to get a closer look at the license plate. He says that this is when the men in the Kia drove off and struck another vehicle at Maybaum Avenue.
Both men got out of the Kia and tried to run away but were quickly arrested. Fragé says they are each facing a charge of receiving stolen property since the Kia was stolen.
No injuries were reported.
